Plot

Alyssa Esposito, who was left as a child on a river bank with a wound on her neck, is silent and communicates through sign language. He works as a cleaner in a secret government laboratory in Baltimore, Maryland, at the height of the Cold War in 1962. Her only friends are her closed-next-door neighbor Giles, a middle-aged struggling advertising painter and her co-worker Zello Fuller.

A mysterious creature captured from the South American River is facilitated by Colonel Richard Strickland, who is in charge of the project for this study. Curious about the creature, Alyssa discovers that it is a manned amphibian. She begins to see him in secret, and the two become a close bond.

While trying to exploit the amphibian man for an American advantage in the space race, General Frank Hoyt is eventually persuaded by Strickland to vivify it. A scientist, Robert Hoffstetler – who is actually a Soviet spy named Dmitry Mosenkov – makes unsuccessful attempts to keep the Amphibian Man alive for further study and, at the same time, is ordered by his Soviet operatives to euthanize the creature . When Elisa fulfills the American plans for the Amphibian Man, she persuades Giles to help him free him. Hoffstetler proceeds on Elisa’s plot and chooses to assist her. Although initially reluctant, Zelda also joins a successful escape.

Alyssa keeps the amphibian man in his bathtub, planning to leave him in a nearby canal when it rains to provide access to the sea in several days’ time. Strickland interrogates Elisa and Zelda with the others, but learns nothing. Back at the apartment, Giles discovers the Amphibian Man swallowing one of his cats. Shocked, the Amphibian man walked out of the apartment, cutting Giles’s arm. Before Alyssa finds him and returns him to his apartment, he walks down from the cinema, luckily vacated as a patron. He touches Gilles with his bald head and his injured arm, and the next morning, Gilles realizes that his hair has grown back and that his arm wounds have healed. After initially refusing, Alyssa had sex with an amphibian man in her shower.
