Plot

Seventeen-year-old Holden Qielfield lives in 1951 at an unspecified institution in Southern California near Hollywood. She wants to be with her brother DB, a writer and World War II veteran, with whom Holden resents becoming a screenwriter, one month after her discharge. Holden remembers the events of last Christmas.

Holden began his story at the Pensi Preparatory Academy, a special boarding school in Eggerstown, Pennsylvania. Holden, aged sixteen in 1950, was expelled from Pensi due to poor work and is not to return after the Christmas holiday, which begins next Wednesday. He plans to return home that day so that he will not be present when his parents receive notice of his expulsion. After forgetting the equipment in the metro and seizing a fencing match in New York, he is invited to the home of his history teacher, Mr. Spencer. Spencer is a meaningful but long-lasting old man. Spencer greets him and advises him, but he further embarrasses Holden by further criticizing Holden’s history work.

Holden returned to his dorm wearing a new red hunting hat he had bought in New York. His hostel neighbor Robert Ekley is one of the few students who did not miss the game. Ekaly, unpopular among his peers, annoys Holden with his inept questions and mannerisms. Holden, who feels sorry for Ekli, endures his presence. Later, Holden agrees to write an English composition for his roommate, Ward Straddler, who is going for a date. However, Holden is distressed to learn that Stradlator dates an old friend, Jane Gallagher, who had romantic feelings for Holden and feels protective. That night, Holden decides to go to a Carrie Grant comedy with his friends Mal Brossard and Ekli. Since Ackley and Mal had already seen the film, they just returned to playing pinball and Pencey. When the Stradylator returns hours later, he fails to appreciate the deeply personal creation Holden has written for him about Holden’s late brother Ellie’s baseball gloves, and refuses to reveal if he is Jane’s Slept with Enraged, Holden punches him, and the Stradulator easily wins the ensuing battle. When Holden continued to insult her after the fight, the straddler knocked her unconscious and left her with a bloody nose. After leaving for Ekalie’s room, Holden is disappointed when he treats her rudely. Fed up with the so-called “phonies” at Pensi Prep, Holden decides to leave Pensi early, sells his typewriter to earn money and catch a train to New York’s Penn Station. Holden intends to stay away from her home in a hotel until Wednesday, when her parents must have received news of her expulsion. On board the train, Holden meets the mother of a wealthy, obnoxious Pencey student, named Ernest Morrow, and lies to him about himself and his son.
